Dailies #4

A hypertext is a way to travel the internet word to word. You can press a hypertext and it will take you to the next video, page, image or website. This is a great way to find things reference to what we had searched before. A hypertext also references are thinking of cyclic history. In cyclic history, it goes in a cycle and repeats itself. That is just like a hypertext because it can bring you to and from pages that have the same related theme or words. It can also bring you right back where you started because everything is connected. It also is like cyclic history because when it repeats one event leads to another and than another. The cycle just keeps going and will for a long time. We can use a hypertext to lead us where we might want to go. Hypertexts can be useful but sometimes be not helpful. For example a Hypertext could take you to something totally different then what you originally searched. It could also lead you right back where you came from. That is how hypertext relates to cyclic history and its ways.

Don't our traditional forms of information communication, notably "the book" and especially "the textbook" contribute to our belief in linear history?

In our ways to communicate information we have many. Through the years it has changed but one way has stayed constant. That is in the form of a book or a textbook. They have been constant in what they teach and the info they give us. Our textbooks must be consistent so they chose one way to tech history to people. It is also easier to explain history in the since of being linear. Because we grew up with the book and the textbook it is usually what we base all of our knowledge. The reason we use the book and textbook for learning is because they are much cheaper than buying everyone a computer and using it to see the other ways to view history and other things. Also books and textbooks are use because ever since the printing press it was so much easier to pass on information through print materials/ books. Linear can also be expressed best on a straight piece of paper. You could fit more information on a timeline on a page compared to maybe a vortex or a circle. With linear history is expressed with dates that would be easier to read and to understand. It could also be that the other theories are harder to understand compared to the linear theory because of how easy to understand it is. Because just like we learned the four types of history theories, I had trouble understanding the other three compared to linear because I grew ups learning the ways of linear theory.

Does history progress? Is an elephant really "better" than a mammoth?

History does progress over time through evolution and industry. It has been progressing since the beginning of time and will cease to stop until the end of time. History can be expressed in many ways such as vortex, Hegelian, cyclic, and linear. History made up of many small events and many huge events. Through the vortex theory of it keeps going and never stops it just has smaller events which lead to bigger events. In Hegelian history it expressed through two different events affects each other and cause a brand new event. With each new event it combines with another event that creates more events. In cyclic history it is expressed in that everything has a cycle. It means it goes through a cycle and no matter what there is a cycle. History progresses through evolution. For example there was the mammoth and now we have the elephant. I think mammoths are so much better than elephants. The mammoth was superior because it weighed more and could fend for itself. Now we have elephants that are at zoos and are now fed by us and they do not fend for themselves, only a few still fend for themselves. History had also progressed through industry we have changed the whole way things are done compared then in the past. Humans can’t really see our history progress through evolution because it happens over many of years and it is such a slight change compared to through industry. People can see how there world is changing through factories, technology, and transportation.

Is modern life "always" better than it was in the past?

When saying modern life is always better is a wrong statement. In the past we might not have had the technology we have now but we do have longer lives but in the past we didn’t have inflation. Inflation has increased the price of everything we own and it determines how much we spend on products and services. There are many pros and cons in modern life. New technology has changed the ways we live and work. It has changed our day to day and also the jobs we may have. Many jobs are gone that used to be very prominent in the past like soda jerks, a town crier, and typewriter engineers. Many would make money with these jobs but they are no longer here. The needs of people change and things go out of business while others replace the old. Even though now we have medicine that can make us live longer and we are not dying by different diseases that used to exist. With the different ways of life we have more things that help us multitask. Transportation is another good thing that has helped us in modern life. In the 1930’s cars were a luxury but now they are a thing everyone owns. The world has gone from horse to trains to cars in our modern world. With modern life we have also changed the way we get news and are informed. We have changed a lot since the beginning of time to modern life. So in the end there are many pros and cons of our modern life.

Sell the fresh foods in a stand in the hallway near the Cafeteria.
Everyday make and organic option in the meals served.

Mid Term #1

Around the time of 2001-2003 a sudden drop occurred in overseas travel.The sudden drop in the graph was because of 9/11. Most Airways stop bringing people in form foreign countries because of the threat of another bombing. This is linked to the bombing that occurred in New York City. The graph can explain different events because of changes in the graph. You see a drop in the graph you explain the the sudden drop.

Interview

I chose to Interview my close friend Andrew Tran. He is from Vietnam and his primary Vietnamese, which on occasions I have heard him speak this to his parents.

Q: Was it difficult to learn English?

A: It wasn't really that difficult to learn English because i grew up in the United states

Q: In what ways have you benefited from learning the language?

A: I've benefited from learning the language because if i ever wanted to go back to the home country where my parents were born I would be able to communicate and fit right in.

Q: Do you still speak your primary language at home or with family and friends?

A: I speak Vietnamese with my parents at home.

Q: Why / Why not?

A: I mostly speak Vietnamese because my parents always think that its good to practice the language and because they aren't really good with English

Q: How did you come to go to school in the United States?

A: I started to go pre-school in Maryland and I've been going ever since because my parents wanted me to get a good education so they put me into a private school when i was in 1st grade

Q: What are some of the differences between an American school and a school in your home country?

A: In america a lot of schools provide transportation or your parents drive you to school while in Vietnam my mom would have to walk about 5 miles to and from school everyday because not everyone had cars other than that the school system is the same it goes up to grade 12.

Q: Where you born in America?

A: I was born in Syracuse, New York mostly known as upstate New York

Q: Does your extended family speak your language?

A: Mostly everyone in my family speaks Vietnamese my cousins speak it, Uncles and Aunts

Q: Do you have relatives in the Vietnam?

A: I do have a lot of relatives still currently living in Vietnam My Grandma was living there but passed away about 6 months ago and i still have Uncles and Aunts living there.

Q: Do you ever get to see you Family in Vietnam?

A: The only time i ever get to see my family in Vietnam is when we get to skype with each other

Q: How long have you spent in Vietnam?

A: I haven't really spent any time at all in Vietnam because i was planning on going back after i finish college

Q: Do you ever travel to Vietnam?

A: I haven't traveled to Vietnam yet at all

Q: Have you ever been to school in Vietnam?

A: No, I haven't been to school in Vietnam

Q: If you lived in Vietnam would you have a car or a nice house?

A: If i lived in Vietnam i would most likely have a motorcycle or a moped as a car and a pretty decent house it wouldn't be a house like i have in America

Q: Would you rather live in America or Vietnam?

A: If it came down to it i think i would rather live in America then in Vietnam but i would love to have the ability to go back and have annual visits when i can

Q: How much of your family is in America?

A: About half of my family is currently living in America which includes my mom's side of the family of my grandma, grandpa, uncle, aunts, and cousins. I have some of my dad's family in America which includes my uncle, aunts, and cousins.

My Life is Russian

Day 24, June 11

It is another cold night here in Russia. Later I will go back to school and continue learning until around October when I can go back to America. I don’t miss it much because everything is so new and there are lots to do. My friends Vladimir and Nikkoli stay with me as we sit and enjoy the day off. So far life has been easy and I have learned a lot about their culture. Yesterday was Russia Day; it is a lot like America’s Independence Day. We celebrated and are now taking the day off. Things I don’t understand about Russia are how they have so much land but low population. I have also learned how people don’t live as long here in Russia compared to other countries. I have learned Russia use less fuel then other countries. Also in Russia I have a greater chance to be employed, while spending less. I don’t think Russia is better than living in the U.S. Did you know that I have an 83% more change of getting STD's over here in Russia? But health care is significantly cheaper. I really don't think Russia is the place for me. I would make 63% less money then America and if I had a child here, there is an 68% chance they will die in infancy. Hopefully, Nikkoli will let me come to hockey practice tomorrow. He plays for his high school and we started chatting about hockey in america and the Olympics. I tell him how my favorite team is the Black Hawks. I would also end up working 12% more hours then in America. Also knowing the history of Russia I would not want to live in this country. The landscape in Russia is magnificent. The area is snowy and few patches of green in this chilly area. The architecture is really interesting. There are huge buildings and lots of little shops. Demitri I hope you get this letter and share with all of our friends back in the U.S.
